Barry Babysitting Techniques

'How do you do it?' people ask me all the time. Well, on top of being a completely awesome "Molly Mormon" supermom(what? you didn't get up at 4:30am to read your scriptures and run? for shame!), I also ascribe to a very easy 6 step program.

Step 1: Lots of treats. It keeps 'em quiet(especially if it is extra sticky toffee/caramel)

Step 2: Entertain 'em. If it is an educational cartoon you get extra points.

Sometimes after the first two steps the "children" are still fidgety/annoying/loud/there. If this is the case then I 'call in the big guns' with steps 3-6.

Step 3: Restrain the children. Blankets, duct tape...whatever works for you.

Step 4: Contain the children.

Step5: Rough them up a bit. Even if it doesn't calm them down, you might feel a little better.

And FINALLY, for the really difficult cases...

When nothing else works...

Step 6: Trade them for a puppy.

*no actual children where harmed in the writing of this blog.

love is in the air...

Pretty sure that this is going to reappear at a 16th birthday party(alternative title... "Reason's to Hate Your Parents?").

wake up Playmate!

We're driving home late. Well, technically it is only 9 p.m. but since we have the kids with us it might as well be midnight. As soon as the engine starts Gavin conks out...seriously he is drooling before we get to the end of the street. Jane and Anne are next, Jane's head lolling uncomfortably. Atticus...well, Atticus has a talent for staying awake(when we drove thru the night to get to New Jersey it was a little creepy having him wide eyed and silent at 3am). If anything is going on, he will stay up for it. He is pretty bummed about his best friend/playmate/partner in crime falling asleep and leaving him to his lonesome. As I watch he leans over and starts rubbing Jane's leg. That wakes her up giggling, and they both laugh for a few seconds. Within a minute though, she is out again. He pokes her with his toe. Nothing. He kicks her. Nothing. He kicks her repeatedly. Nothing. So sad/funny to watch. He is getting frustrated now. He starts whacking her on the shoulder while still poking her with his toes. Finally, she wakes up. Not giggling this time. Screaming actually. Poor Atticus, she falls back asleep within the minute and he sits there glumly,
awake, all the way home.

Kiss Me!....

...I'm Irish(among other things!)

the adoration of Anne...

Adorable doesn't even begin to describe it. She rules the roost at our house. Her siblings fawn all over her. Gavin asks if she can sleep with him every day and she regularly has the honor of being his "best friend". Atticus thinks she is one of the coolest toys he has ever seen. She is so mellow, happy, and just plain lovable. Seriously, she is ok with being stepped on, sat upon, ridden like a pony, and kissed to the point of drowning. If she can be with her brothers and sister she is happy! I am understanding more everyday why she was just not willing to wait until I was ready to get pregnant again. She didn't want to miss the party!

helping...

I am buried under a pile of blankets(ability to use a blanket = sure sign that I am not pregnant =) I hear the dulcet sweet sounds of chaos coming from the kids room. Ugh. I don't want to get up. 10 more minutes...they can wait 10 more minutes...

*muffled shriek*

Gavin: "The twins are awake!"(Gavin can climb over the gate and so he comes to my bed most mornings around 6:30)
Me: "They are...why don't you go let them out." (he can also take down the gate)

A minute later Jane wanders in, hair skeewumpus and eyes still full of sleep. Atticus I can still hear yelling to be let out. Apparently he didn't get the monkey gene and is still not able to climb out of his bed.

*more yelling*

Me: (still trying not to move from under the blankets) "Gavin, will you go help Atticus out of bed?"
Gavin: (very excited) "Yes Mom!"

A couple of minutes later they both wander in, and Atticus has a huge grin on his face. My goal of sleeping longer is soon destroyed and the morning rush of diapers, breakfast, etc. begins. It is not till much later that I walk in the kids room and find this:

back to normal...

...which for Jane is not necessarily normal.

Turns out she has a really bad ear infection. Really bad. She got a shot in the office and is on an oral antibiotic for the next 10 days. Within a few hours of the shot she went from being a puddle of misery to a very hungry, very spunky girl. Hooray, and welcome back Jane!

poor sick baby girl...

I hate it when my kids get sick. I always feel so inadequate and paranoid. Jane has had a rough week. She got sick on Monday, fever, fussiness, the works. Tuesday was pretty bad. I decided that if she was still not feeling well on Wednesday, then we were going to the doctor. Of course Wednesday dawned and she was perky and full of spunk. Saturday evening she developed a fever again. I ended up piggy backing tylenol/motrin every 3 hours just to keep it from the 103-104 range. Tonight her fever has finally gone down, but she woke up crying in pain. She screamed and sobbed for at least an hour until the motrin kicked in. We are going to the doctor TOMORROW!

It's all fun and games...

...until someone turns on the shower

...unfortunately for them they only managed to push the water to "cold" before they turned the shower on! These are the things that happen when daddy babysits. Now when Auntie Shannon babysits it is a lot more of this:

And with my little brothers it is more like this:

viva la babysitters! you help me keep my claws around sanity, and provide a couple of laughs in the process.

best friend...

"Gavin!" Rui yells as he sees him walk into the nursery. He runs over and gives Gavin a big hug. Gavin shoves him away.

Gavin: "NO! No Rui, you not my best friend!"

Me: "Gavin! That is not a nice thing to say! And we don't push. Give Rui a hug and say you're sorry."
Gavin: "Mommy, I don't wan't to give Rui a hug!"

Me: "You give Rui a hug and say your sorry!"

Gavin: "I not sorry, I don't want to give Rui a hug!"

Me: (with gritted teeth and laser eyes) "You give Rui a hug and say you are sorry!"

Gavin: (face glum, trudges over to Rui, leans in to hug him and gives him a few half hearted pats)
Me: (prompting) "What do you say?
Gavin:(whispering in Rui's ear) "Rui, you are NOT my best friend!"

Luckily I am pretty sure that Rui did not understand what Gavin was getting at. Luckily Rui's mom thought it was funny. And just in case you were wondering who has the honor of being Gavin's best friend...that would be Elliot...the dragon from "Pete's Dragon."
